BJP cadre to verify ‘missed calls’ during membership drive

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is set to launch a 35-day special membership drive across the country from July 6, has asked its workers to verify “missed calls” from those seeking membership to weed out bogus callers, after a sizable number of such callers were found to be fake during a similar exercise in 2014.

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who has been appointed the convener of the special membership drive, said booth-level workers will be given the task of verifying callers on a dedicated mobile number, and get membership forms filled by those who have made calls. This is expected to weed out random calls by people who do not want to take membership.

Around 20 million bogus calls were detected in 2014 when the party got over 110 million calls in total, according to estimates made at the time.

The special membership drive (called Sangathan Parv by the party) will be held till August 10, with the main thrust on states where the party does not have a strong political presence.

July 6 is the birth anniversary of BJP founder Shyama Prasad Mookerjee.

Chouhan said the focus of the membership drive will be on states like Kerala, Tamil N a d u , A n d h r a Pradesh, Telangana, Pondicherry, Odisha, West Bengal, the Kashmir valley, Sikkim, among others.

He also reiterated BJP chief Amit Shah’s remark that the party had not yet reached its peak and efforts should be made to expand politically to uncharted territory.

Once the special membership drive is over, the process of holding organisational elections will begin from the booth and block level to the top. Of the states, 50% have to complete organisational elections before the national president is elected.

The special drive will be followed by an active members’ drive between August 16 and August 31 to induct those who want to work for the party. Meanwhile, the regular membership option will be open for individuals till January 31 even as the organisational elections are on.

BJP will also do an analysis of booth-wise voting data to determine its weak spots and work towards strengthening the party in those regions.

Chouhan said the membership drive will follow the party dictum of “Sarva Sparshi, Sarv Vyapi (touching base with all, covering all areas or booths)”.
